Hingham boasts a rich history in youth boys’ lacrosse, with the sport deeply embedded in the community’s fabric. The Hingham High School (HHS) lacrosse program began in the late 1970s, laying the foundation for a robust youth system that has flourished over the past three decades. It is now one of the largest boys’ youth lacrosse programs in the state. With nearly 40 years of history, excitement and enrollment in Hingham Youth Boys Lacrosse (HYBL) remain high – and the 2025 Spring Season begins again in March. This year’s Registration is OPEN and signing up ASAP is highly encouraged! All details are available online or can be obtained by emailing Hi*****************@gm***.com.
Founded in 1987, the Hingham Youth Boys Lacrosse was one of just 10 youth programs in Massachusetts at the time. Currently, the HYBL program serves grades 1 through 8, focusing on skill development and fostering a passion for the game, as well as an introductory opportunity at the kindergarten level through its coed “Little Laxers” program. By third grade, players compete in the prestigious Town Pride League (TPL), one of Massachusetts top youth lacrosse leagues.
HYBL play is centered around the spring season, emphasizing regular practice sessions and competitive play with the goal of ensuring a seamless transition for young athletes into high school lacrosse.
Notably, Hingham’s program also focuses on developing “the great middle,” fostering a deep program with a strong sense of camaraderie and inclusivity beyond just the top-tier players. The program utilizes a hybrid coaching system, blending the expertise and talent parent-coaches with strong lacrosse backgrounds as well as external coaches, the combination of which provide diverse perspectives and a depth of knowledge.
HYBL has pioneered innovations for town youth programs in MA, starting a FALL BALL program in 1989 and a SUNDAY WINTER SKILLS program in 1999 that both continue today. With the growing popularity of lacrosse in Hingham, the program contributed to building the WARD St complex, supported by donations from Dave Margetts and countless volunteer hours. This facility has become a cherished home for the program, unmatched by most towns.
Today Hingham’s Youth Boys Lacrosse program continues to cultivate a legacy of success and community involvement. The youth program’s excellence feeds directly into the high school team, which consistently ranks among Massachusetts elite. Under Coach John Todd, HHS has produced talented players who excel at the collegiate level, earning numerous state titles and playoff victories along the way. Impressively, Coach Todd holds the record for the most wins in Massachusetts high school boys’ lacrosse history over his nearly 30 years at the helm of the Harbormen. The current state of the program sees the youth and high school programs remaining closely aligned in their goals and values.
The program’s success is built on dedicated coaching, community support, and passionate players. Over its 37-year history, countless players, coaches, volunteers, and families have contributed to HYBL’s mission of player development, hometown pride, and memorable experiences. Alumni and current lacrosse families continue to strengthen the program, making HYBL and HHS the gold standard in Massachusetts lacrosse.
