The 8th graders exhibited what an elite offense they have by scoring 7 touchdowns against the Walpole Rebels on Sunday. Whether in the air or on the ground the Raiders scored on almost every possession as the defense dominated the line of scrimmage to earn the victory.
QB Hudson Garrity took the first snap from Brooks Johnson and threw a 65 yard touchdown pass to the speedy Cole Shevlin. Neil Deininger capped off the drive with the extra point and just 10 seconds into the game the Raiders led 7-0. Upfront Brayden Huber made consecutive tackles to force a quick punt. Back at the helm QB Garrity connected with Shamus Devine across the middle for a first down, then Garrity used his legs to pick up 21 yards. This set up a short 12 yard pass to Cole Shevlin for his second touchdown catch to go up 13-0. On defense Denny Costello was a dominating force upfront making multiple tackles for losses as Braden Oun and Mason Devine made big stops to close out the first quarter.
The secondary was top of their game as Cam Forger, Andy Gerlach and Ryan Fernquist pressed a receiver allowing Sam Godfrey to make an over the shoulder interception at their own 22 yard line. One play later QB Garrity threw a slant pass to Rhett Shevlin who outsprinted everyone for a 78 yard TD and Coen Melgoza ran it in for the extra point for a 20-0 lead. Linebackers Mickey Syp and Grant Riordan stuffed the run but on 3rd down Walpole’s running back darted outside for a 44 yard TD to narrow the score to 20-8. On the ensuing drive Walpole managed to strip the ball from Hingham and ran it back to the 7 yard line. With their backs to the goal line the Raiders defense dug in with tackles from Frank Cavagnaro and Will Berkeley forcing a 4th down which Walpole kicked an impressive 37 yard field goal to tighten the game at 20-11. Back on offense QB Garrity threw a screen pass to Rhett Shevlin who followed a crushing block from Shamus Devine sprinting 64 yards for the TD. Evan Tomasello followed that drive up with a 22 yard rushing TD. On the point after Neil Deininger threw a slant to Andrew Nolan who was tackled just shy of the goal for a 32-11 lead. Duncan Wilder and Ryan Crespi combined to sack the Walpole QB to end the first half with a commanding lead.
Walpole started the second half on offense when Jack Hart broke up a pass to quickly force a three and out. The powerful offensive line of Will Taylor, Mason Devine, Braden Oun, Ezra Everly and Brayden Huber opened a hole for Johhny Heller to run for a 39 yard TD. On the extra point QB Deininger threw to Mason Aframe who dove over the cone to up the score to 39-11.
Matthew Palermo and Asher Ellis made a tackle for loss and John Peterson just missed and interception as Hingham forced another Walpole punt. QB Garrity threw a 34 yard pass to a leaping Shamus Devine at the 1 yard line. Capping the scoring off Mason Aframe followed his blockers Mickey Syp, Grant Riordan and Wes Govini for the TD to make it 45-19 for the win
Great job reporting.
