HISTORY MOMENT: The Daly Family

By:  Bob Malme, Archivist, Hingham Historical Society

In honor of St. Patrick's Day and thanks to two binders of the John P. Richardson Collection co-owned by the Hingham Historical Commission and Hingham Historical Society, I would like to introduce the Dalys, one of the town’s earliest Irish immigrant families. Daniel Daly (1825-1911) was born in County Armagh, Ireland and arrived in Hingham in 1855, soon after marrying Nancy Crowe (1835-1905) from the County of Tipperary.

After serving in the Civil War, Daniel began work as a gardener, hiring himself out to prominent locals, such as Charles B. Barnes of Summer Street. He was soon able to build a house at 19 Green Street which remained in the family for the next century, later owned by his son Edmund (1866-1930) and his daughter, Annabel (1900-1993). A gardener, a clothier, a shopkeeper, a Postmaster, click on the link below to read in detail about three generations of Dalys on Green Street.

  1. Can I get more info on the Dalys ? My father’s name was Daniel Daly and we lived on Green Street and Annabelle Daly was his aunt.
