On Wednesday, August 5, nine-year-old Rowan McDevitt suffered serious injuries after being struck by a car while using a crosswalk on High Street. McDevitt was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital by Boston MedFlight, where he was assessed by medical professionals. Though his injuries were extensive, they were ruled non-life threatening and Rowan is expected to make a full recovery.
According to an email sent to all Plymouth River School students by Principal Melissa Smith, "[Rowan] has a broken leg, a laceration in his other leg, and a few broken bones in his face. With that said, there is nothing life-threatening and we are grateful for that. We’re hopeful that he will have a quick recovery and he’ll be able to see the crew at PRS soon."
Last night, friends and neighbors gathered in front of the McDevitt's house to welcome Rowan home from the hospital. The nine-year-old's homecoming featured dozens of supporters, an escort by the Hingham Police and Hingham Firemen, and, of course, Rowan's friend Ryan Cunningham, who was with Rowan on the day of the accident. Cunningham was seen holding a "Rowan Strong" sign to show his support.
While Rowan is expected to have a long journey of recovery ahead, The Anchor sends our well-wishes and joins the community in enthusiastically welcoming him home.
Rowan is a Hingham Youth Hockey player and fellow Hingham Youth Hockey Dad, Doug Beck has started a Facebook Fundraising campaign to support the McDevitt Family during this time. The fundraiser can be found here.
Wishing you a successful and pain free, as possible, recovery, Rowan.
