School Resource Officer Katelin McGillicuddy wishes all the children in town a happy and safe Halloween, especially during these very unusual times.

McGillicuddy, who has been a Hingham police officer for 10 years, was assigned to this role -- which covers the four elementary schools -- last December. "Then COVID-19 hit just as I was starting to meet everyone," she said.

Recently she has had the opportunity to gather with some of the elementary kids outside to share safety tips with a Halloween focus. The small groups were socially distanced, and the students wore face masks.

McGillicuddy is sharing her Halloween safety guidance with teachers whose classes she has not been able to meet with in person.

"I'm happy to be in this role," she said. "Even though things are very different these days, it's hard not to smile when I see the kids get all happy and excited to see me!"

McGillicuddy appreciates children's excitement about Halloween. "It's all about the candy, getting excited about dressing up in a costume, and spending time with friends -- although this year will be different," she said.

Here are Officer McGillicuddy's Halloween safety tips:

  • Wear bright-colored, warm clothing.
  • Bring a flashlight.
  • Glow sticks or bracelets are a good idea.
  • Never trick-or-treat alone: stay with family or a trusted adult.
  • Only go to houses with lights on that look welcoming.
  • Stay outside of houses where you are trick-or-treating -- never go inside!
  • Never enter a vehicle when someone offers you candy.
  • Stay on the sidewalk. When crossing the street, use crosswalks and watch and obey traffic signals.
  • Carry a cell phone , and in the event of an emergency, call 911. Put devices away when walking across the street to avoid being distracted.
  • Have an adult check your candy to be sure the wrappings aren't torn and that the treats look safe to eat.
  • Wear a face mask even if you’re wearing a costume that has a mask. Make sure the eye holes are big enough to allow good visibility.
  • Stay home if you’re not feeling well.
  • Remain six feet apart from people who are not members of your household, including your friends.
  • Have fun while staying healthy and being smart!
