Racial injustice has been highlighted nationwide, but what’s happening closer to home? Join the Hingham Unity Council (HUC) for a “Race Talk” Thursday, February 25 from 7:00 to 8:15 p.m. on Zoom to uncover some vulnerable and honest truths about what it’s like to be a person of color in Hingham with a view toward discovery, understanding and growth.

Panelists include Hingham residents Sonya Fairhurst and Marc Lucas along with HUC member and moderator, Manny Oppong. Each will share their personal, and sometimes painful, experiences living and working as persons of color in the Hingham community. All are invited to listen to the panelists’ stories and ask questions anonymously in a safe space.

“Our stories are just that – our stories. We do not speak for every person of color. But having discussions like this has the potential to open eyes to some realities in our town and encourage important dialogue,” said Oppong. “We hope to break down the often-invisible barriers that separate neighbors so that all people may feel welcome in Hingham.”

As modeled by others like Emmanuel Acho in his video series, “Uncomfortable Conversations With A Black Man,” and Scituate United for Action on Equality’s race talk series, these open and honest discussions can be an important step in understanding racial injustices and creating a more equitable and just world.

“We understand that having conversations about race can be uncomfortable for some people,” says Ann McCarthy-Egan, a HUC member and one of the event’s organizers. “But stories have such power. We hope offering a platform for these discussions will inspire understanding and positive action here at home.”

All are welcome to register for this event. The discussion will also be recorded for future viewing.
