Town Election: Three Potential Races and a Confirmed School Committee Race

RWB Hingham

February 27,2019 by Carol Britton Meyer

Besides the confirmed School Committee race for the April 27 town election, there are three potential races -- Town Moderator, Planning Board, and the Board of Health. There's a race when two or more citizens return their completed papers for a particular seat.

The deadline for submitting completed nomination papers is getting close -- Thursday, March 7, by 5 p.m.

Both Thomas Patch and Kevin Ellis have taken out nomination papers for Jennifer Gay Smith's seat on the Planning Board.

Smith said today (March 27) that she will not be running for another term. "I have loved my time serving the Town of Hingham, and I am proud of the work we accomplished as a board," she said.  "I have so much respect and gratitude for all of the citizens of Hingham who step forward to volunteer in the service of our community."

This means that if both Patch and Ellis return their papers there will be a Planning Board race.

Monica Staples pulled papers for Kirk Shilts' seat on the Board of Health. Shilts returned his papers for both his Board of Health and Sewer Commission seats. If Staples also returns hers, there would be a Board of Health race. (It was inadvertently reported last week that Staples had returned her papers.)

Another potential race is between Town Moderator Michael Puzo, who has returned his papers, and Megan Buhr, who also picked up papers for that seat but has not yet returned them.

There's a four-way race for three School Committee seats -- Joshua Ross, Nancy Correnti, and incumbents Carlos DaSilva and Elizabeth (Liza) O'Reilly. Kay Praschma is not running for another term.

Ryan Lynch is running unopposed for Sarah Melia's Recreation Commission seat. Melia is not running for another term.

Zoning Board of Appeals member Joseph Fisher returned his nomination papers for Selectman Paul Healey's seat.  Healey, whose term also expires this year, has not yet announced his intentions to run for reelection or not.

Board of Assessors member Christine Roberts, Municipal Light Board member Roger Freeman, and Housing Authority member Robert Keyes have also pulled papers. Roberts has returned hers.
