Good news for South Shore families! As of June 25, we can get to Georges Island, the very interesting historic and picnicking destination and centerpiece of the Boston Harbor Islands, by MBTA ferry directly from the Hingham Shipyard ferry terminal. This service to Georges Island will last through Columbus Day, October 11, 2021. There is also more weekend ferry service to Logan Airport from the Hingham Shipyard and from Hull.
Weekdays, MBTA ferries to Long Wharf leaving Hingham at 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM will stop at Georges Island en route. Return ferries leaving Long Wharf at 1:00PM and 2:00 PM will stop at Georges Island at 1:25 PM and 2:25 PM en route back to Hingham. If you wish to stay on the island later, you can take a regular island ferry back to Boston’s Long Wharf, and pick up a later ferry back to Hingham.
On weekends, there is more frequent service to Georges Island from Hingham. Weekend ferries to Boston leaving at 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM stop at Georges Island before heading to Long Wharf. And ferries leaving Long Wharf at 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM, 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM will arrive at Georges Island and depart at 12:25, 2:25, 3:25 and 4:25 PM for the Hingham Shipyard.
Weekday ferry service to Logan leaves Hingham at 5:40 AM and 6:40 AM, and departs Hull at 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM, arriving at Logan Airport (after a stop at Long Wharf) at 6:40 AM and 7:40 AM. Hingham passengers can also get to Logan via the 1:00 PM and 5:15 PM ferries from Hingham, arriving at 1:45 PM and 5:45 PM at Logan. A bus shuttle at Logan takes passengers to air terminals. There are no later Logan Airport ferry returns to Hingham or Hull during the weekdays. However, air passengers arriving at Logan Airport can take the bus shuttle to the water transportation terminal and pick up a water taxi to Rowes Wharf or to Long Wharf to make a ferry link to Hingham or Hull.
There will be slightly more ferry service to Logan Airport on weekends as well, leaving Hingham at 8:00AM, 12:00 PM, and 4:00 PM, and arriving at Logan 45 minutes later. Ferries depart Logan Airport on weekends at 8:45 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:45 PM, and 4:45 PM for Long Wharf (except for the 11:00 AM which travels direct to Hingham), before heading to Hingham.
Once at Georges Island, there are usually inter-island shuttles to others of the Boston Harbor Islands. However, because of the pandemic these schedules have not yet appeared. Stay tuned!
Don’t forget that you can take the Hingham and Hull ferries to Boston to connect with ferries to Salem (Long Wharf), and to Provincetown (Long Wharf and Commonwealth Pier). Take your bicycles with you. It’s also possible to take the Hingham/Hull ferry to Boston, to bike to the Provincetown ferry terminal, take your bike to Provincetown, and after a day of biking, swimming and touring, to take your bike onto the afternoon ferry to Plymouth. Tourists from Boston have been known to bring Blue Bikes onto the ferries to Hull, and then to bike around the area, ending up at the Hingham terminal for the return to Boston.
