Select board update: Hingham vaccination rate high; Sgt. Chesna remembered; ferry/train advocacy continues

Town Administrator Tom Mayo reports that about 68 percent of Hingham residents were fully vaccinated as of last week.

While there were five new reported cases of COVID-19 in June, there have been no new cases so far this month and no Delta variant cases reported in Hingham thus far.

"This is all great news," Mayo told the Select Board Tuesday night.

Seniors in need of transportation to get a vaccination are encouraged to call the Senior Center at (781) 741-1458.

Hingham Link volunteers, who are fully vaccinated, are available to drive town residents to vaccination appointments. The process is easiest when you sign up online at  https://www.hinghamlink.com/needhelp -- or call (781) 908-0590.

Be sure to leave your name, phone number, street address, and other details. A few days' notice is helpful, as it is difficult for the Hingham Link group to arrange schedules for rides at the last minute.

Vaccinations are available nearby -- in Hingham, Norwell, Weymouth, and at other locations.

Remembering Sgt. Chesna

Mayo also acknowledged the third anniversary of the death of Weymouth Police Sgt. Michael Chesna.

"This tragedy occurred in neighboring Weymouth, when Sgt. Chesna was murdered in the line of duty. This was a deeply personal loss [for many], including Hingham residents and town employees -- especially the Hingham police and fire departments, who worked closely with him," Mayo said. "Our thoughts will continue to be with his family during these difficult days, and he will always be remembered."

Ferry/train update

Chair Joseph Fisher said the Select Board will continue to place high priority on advocating for the continuation of Hingham MBTA ferry and train service.

"Our state legislators are working for our benefit to ensure that everyone's feet are held to the fire for those options to remain," he said.

Select Board member Liz Klein will now step into the liaison role for this issue, which Fisher has held for some time.

"Ferry and train service are such a benefit to Hingham residents -- and not just for students, seniors, and business folks, but for those who just want to enjoy Boston -- and also for those living in the city who would like to travel to Hingham by train or ferry to enjoy our shops and services," Fisher said.
