Hingham residents and other motorists who pass through town are advised to plan ahead, with a significant road construction project along a 1.7-mile stretch of Rte. 228 scheduled for September.
The limits of the work run from the intersection of Short Street (Rt. 228) and School Street in Hingham Centre to the intersection of Hull Street (Rt. 228) and East Street. Travel delays are to be expected, with detours in place while the project is carried out.
The paving process will require 10 working days and will take place over a three-week period beginning during the month of September -- with specific dates available at a later date.
The work involves cold planing (controlled milling of the pavement to restore its surface to a specified grade, which provides a high-quality base for a smooth-riding asphalt overlay) and paving.
"We do not yet have definitive dates and the work is, as always, subject to change due to weather and other conditions," Town Engineer J.R. Frey told the Hingham Anchor. "We will be posting message board notices as well."
The project will be carried out during regular work hours -- typically beginning at 7 a.m. and concluding at 3:30 p.m., although on some days the work may continue until as late as 5 p.m.
"Detours could continue until 6 p.m. while equipment is removed from the right-of-way in order to re-open the road," Frey said.
