The Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant (HMLP) today launched a website at www.heirp.com designed to help inform members of the Hingham community of the Hingham Electrical Infrastructure Reliability Project.
The proposed project comprises a new 115-kilovolt underground transmission line from
Weymouth to Hingham and a new enclosed substation at the Hingham Transfer Station, which
together will ensure the reliability of electric service to Hingham homes and businesses.
Currently, Hingham’s electrical needs are supplied by two 115-kV overhead lines on a single set
of poles that link the town to the Massachusetts grid. If the transmission poles were damaged
in an accident or by a natural disaster, Hingham could be without electricity for an extended
period of time.
“A separate, underground transmission line and substation will help ensure the
reliability of electric service in Hingham for many years to come,” said Tom Morahan, general
manager of the Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant. “In order to get this project done, we need
to earn the support of Hingham residents. This website is one of the ways that we are reaching
out to make sure people understand why this project is vital to our future.”
Among the website’s features is a Feedback page, where residents can pose questions
that will be answered by the HMLP team via email, Morahan said.
“We welcome feedback and questions,” Morahan said. “We will do our best to respond
in a timely manner.”
