New semester begins Tuesday, February 1!
South Shore Conservatory (SSC) is enrolling now for its upcoming Spring 2022 semester, which offers a wide range of vocal and instrumental group classes and private lessons, ensemble programs, and creative arts therapies programs, for students of all ages and abilities. Spring semester starts Tuesday, February 1.
Students enrolled in private lessons may take advantage of workshops, recitals, and competitions throughout the school year. Suzuki-based instruction is available to students as young as three, on select instruments, without the prerequisite of reading music. According to the Suzuki Association of America, the philosophy is rooted in the belief that, “Musical ability is not an inborn talent but an ability which can be developed. Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability, just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue.”
Recognizing the benefits of music in early childhood development, SSC continues to offer Music Together®, for children from birth to four years old. This group class offers ajoyful introduction to song, dance and rhythm.
New this spring, SSC offers Sing with Me! with Scituate music educator Peter Mundt, which offers an hour of fun singing for students in grades kindergarten through third. Also new, Intro to Voice, private lessons customized for children ages five through seven, focusing on warming up the voice, developing basic musical skills, and learning age-appropriate repertoire, in a one-on-one setting.
Singing FUNdamentals at the Primo level, ages seven to nine, provides an opportunity for students to develop singing skills in a fun, supportive group setting, preparing them for future private vocal instruction.
Under the direction of Elijah Langille, SSC Youth Orchestra (SSCYO), the Conservatory’s three-tiered youth orchestra program, provides opportunities for young musicians to perform symphonic music at a high level in a structured and supportive orchestral environment, and is offered both in-person and virtually. Students enrolled in private lessons at SSC participate in SSCYO at no cost. The orchestra’s February concert is a collaboration between the musicians of SSCYO and SSC’s dance students. Middle and high school students learn how to develop a cohesive band sound, chart reading, improvisation, and active listening in Rock Band, a program of SSC’s Jazz/Rock/Pop and World Music Department. Students also learn how to use gear typically associated with rock, learn about the music business and promotion, and how to write and rehearse original music through collaborative composition.
Programs such as Percussion Ensemble provide an opportunity for percussion students to strengthen listening skills, improve musicianship, and gain confidence as performers. Irish Traditional Fiddle, offered at three levels, teaches a shared repertoire of tunes, ornamentation, bowing, and history.
Drumming is the name of the game on Sundays, as SSC offers intergenerational Family Drum Circle, and, new for Spring 2022, Drum Circle for Adults.
SSC’s Dance Department offers a full roster of dance programs for children beginning with Creative Movement for children ages three and four. Other dance programs includePrimary Ballet for ages five and six, Ballet levels one through five, Ballet Repertoire and Choreography, Lyrical, Hip Hop, and Contemporary Dance.
South Shore Conservatory’s Creative Arts Therapies (CAT) programs use the arts and creative processes to help individuals maximize their abilities and improve health and wellness. In addition to private music therapy, dance therapy, and accessible yoga, CAT offers a number of group classes and ensembles including SSC Community Voices, an inclusive chorus that meets weekly, and, for adults with memory loss and their caregivers, both in-person and virtual SSC Memory Café programs. The in-person cafe takes place at the Duxbury Senior Center.
Acknowledging the ongoing implications of the COVID-19 pandemic, SSC values the safety of its community as its top priority. The organization continues to closely monitor public health guidance at the local, state, and federal level, boasts a 100 percent vaccination rate among its faculty and staff, and has protocols and precautions in place to respond to an ever-changing situation.
