In response to the tragic news of the killing of 19 elementary school students and two adults by an 18-year-old gunman Tuesday in Uvalde, Texas, Interim Supt. of Schools Gary Maestas sent a message to Hingham families.

"We are deeply saddened by today’s school shooting in Texas, and our thoughts go out to the victims and their loved ones," Maestas said in the statement.

After speaking with Police Chief David Jones, the decision was made to continue to have a regular police presence in the Hingham Public Schools during the final weeks of school, including during school events.

HPS administrators and Hingham police officers meet regularly throughout the year to review safety procedures and protocols, "and we are fortunate to have school resource officers to support our schools," Maestas said.

Because students may be exposed to media coverage of this tragedy, guidance counselors will be available in all the schools "to meet with any student who needs to talk," Maestas stated. "I appreciate our partnership in raising the children of this great community."
