Memorial Day, the unofficial start of summer celebration season, is one the best reasons to shop and play in downtown Hingham. Everyone’s calendars are full of bridal showers, weddings, graduations, Father’s Day, backyard barbeques, and many other events. It’s hard not to wander Downtown and find something that expresses the joy and appreciation for someone and reflects their personality and tastes.

Perusing the stores is a fun departure from online shopping and a sensory revitalization of sorts. It’s inspiring to be able to see, touch, smell, and discover a plethora of options which can include: a beautiful blouse, shawl, dress or ensemble; a comfy sweater; luxurious linens; decorative pillows; a handcrafted bowl; unique stationary; an elegant or wittily-designed tea towel; fine, hand crafted or costume jewelry; candles and hand cream with alluring scents; inspiring artwork, an energized workout or the zen of yoga; kayaking and paddle boarding; luxurious personal care services; plants and flowers; fabulous wine; draft and craft beer; and delicious food. In addition to the unique items, one of the best parts of Downtown shopping is the owner of each business is likely the one serving customers and they are invested in the satisfaction of every person who walks through their doors.

There is so much buzz about how we are valuing experiences even more after long stretches of only being able to dream about them. Even though the location isn’t exotic, Downtown Hingham is a place where shopping for a gift becomes part of the extraordinary pleasure of giving it. It’s more than a quick trip to pick up a present when locals and visitors can stroll the tree-lined streets steeped in history, yet brimming with current fashion, food and entertainment. An added bonus is Downtown’s Third Thursdays Strolls each month when there is live music in the square and store hours are extended to 7:00 p.m.
