Effective today, Oct. 14, the Weir River Water System has lifted the Mandatory Water Use Restrictions that have been in effect in Hingham, Hull, and North Cohasset throughout the summer.
Very little rain fell during the summer months -- with long stretches of no precipitation -- but due to recent rainfall, the situation has improved.
That said, WRWS officials are encouraging all residents "to continue to self-regulate and to observe good conservation practices."
As background, the Weir River Water System instituted a Level 2 Mandatory Total Water Ban effective Aug. 12 after earlier implementing partial bans.
This decision was based on an evaluation of current drought conditions and the need to conserve and maintain water supply and service throughout Hingham, Hull, and North Cohasset. "The WRWS needs to continue supplying clean potable water and fire protection to our customers," an announcement of the total ban stated.
At that time, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts declared the Southeast Region to be in Level 3 – Critical Drought Status.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has now downgraded the Southeast Region to a Level 1 – Significant Drought Status.
