This week's Athlete of the Week presented by College Hype is Clare Lowther. Clare is a sophomore on the girls cross country team and finished third in the Patriot League Championships this past weekend competing against some of the toughest runners on the South Shore. Her time of 19:50 not only placed her in the top three, it also helped secure the Harborwomen's second place finish in the meet.
"Clare has followed up her strong freshman season with an outstanding sophomore year," says head coach Todd Deely. "She has been one of the top runners in the League this year and earned her first All-Star selection. We were hoping for a "top 4" (on Saturday) and she came through with a solid 3rd place finish. I thought she raced really well and really put herself in a position to fight for a top spot. Clare is a tough competitor and leaves everything she has on the course. This season Clare also has a 6th place finish in the Martha's Vineyard invite and a 4th at Catholic Memorial. In both races she recorded the 3rd fastest time by an HHS girl on those respective courses."
Although Clare's accomplishments this season are impressive, they shouldn't come as a surprise. She comes from a long line of Lowther runners in recent history. Her sister Maeve runs cross country and track & field at Loyola and her sister Margaret is a senior and captain of Hingham's cross country team.
While the cross country season is relatively short, there are a lot of high profile races, especially at the end of the season.
"Our next meet for the varsity is the D1 Championship in two weeks," Deely added. "Clare is in a great position to better her 10th place finish from a year ago. Both Clare and the team as a whole have our eyes set on a trip to All-States."
Congrats Clare!
