January 30, 2023 Submitted by the Hingham Police Department
The tragic death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of police officers is appalling and inexcusable. Our thoughts go out to Mr. Nichols’s family, friends and the Memphis community.
The actions by those officers and the officers who failed to intervene leaves everyone, including our officers, disgusted and outraged. Those actions are in direct conflict with the values, policies and training of the Hingham Police Department.
Those unimaginable actions by the five Memphis Police Officers may lead to citizens exercising their First Amendment right to peacefully protest and we stand committed to protecting that right.
We are committed to continuously training in the areas of the use of force, de-escalation techniques, peer intervention and accountability.
The mission of the Hingham Police Department is to protect the safety of our community. We remain committed to doing so with professionalism and transparency while treating everyone with compassion, dignity and respect. ### P.I.O. Lt. Steven Dearth
Thank you officer / chief Dearth for taking the time to write this and make it available to our Hingham community. We all grieve for the too-many violent deaths that occur here in our country, and we depend on our social institutions to help us maintain order and safety. I feel a little bit safer after reading your article. Thank you again.
