February is Heart Health Month and it is a good opportunity to remind ourselves of ways we can take care of our hearts and the symptoms to be aware of that could indicate trouble. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an American dies every 36 seconds from cardiovascular disease. The good news is that heart disease can be preventable. Harbor Medical Associates/Mass General Brigham cardiologist Dr. Anahita Ghorbani shares some key insights around this topic below.
We understand that heart disease can be preventable. What do you wish your patients knew about how to prevent cardiovascular disease?
The mainstay of prevention is focusing on modifiable risk factors. As the first step, patients should have a solid understanding of a healthy lifestyle, i.e., heart-healthy diet, regular exercise, weight management and avoidance of smoking and other substances. It is also important to have regular doctor visits at an earlier age to identify and treat disease conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes, that can contribute to cardiovascular disease.
Are there specific symptoms adults should be aware of that could indicate potential cardiovascular disease?
Symptoms of cardiovascular disease are broad. Some most common cardiovascular symptoms include, but are not limited to, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, palpitations, dizziness or fainting, and exhaustion. Patients should notify their doctor of any new symptoms/concerns and seek medical attention with the development of any of the above symptoms.
