In hockey, they say you can’t win championships without defense and goaltending.  The Harborwomen have a great defense and maybe the one of the best young goalies in the state.  This week’s Athlete of the Week presented by College Hype is freshman Izzy McGarr.  Izzy’s stats over the last four games are amazing, 4-0 allowing only one goal for a .25 goal per game average.  This includes last week’s two playoff games where she also stopped a penalty shot in the Longmeadow game.  A team will win a lot of games with a goaltender on a streak like that.  Just as the Bruins.

She was also recently named a Patriot League Keenan Division All-Star.

“Izzy has developed into a very strong player between the pipes,” says senior captain Abbey Kennedy.  “She has only let in 1 goal in the past 4 games and also has 3 shutouts throughout the season. It is very reassuring for our team and especially the defense to have someone behind us that we can trust. She works so hard on and off the ice and is so deserving of this award!”

Head coach Courtney Turner echos Kennedy’s comments.

“Izzy’s been doing great,” Turner said after their second round win on Saturday. “She’s a kid who wants to get better everyday and she has been since the beginning of the season.  And she’s a great teammate too.”

Izzy and the girls travel to Westborough on Wednesday night to take on third seed Shrewsbury at 6:15pm at Northstar Ice Arena with a chance to make it to the Final Four in Division 1.

Good luck and congrats Izzy!

Freshman goaltender Izzy McGarr stops a penalty shot in the third period of Hingham’s 6-1 win over Longmeadow in the Round of 16.
