With the peak boating season fast approaching, two assistant harbormasters were recently reappointed, and three new harbormasters appointed, upon the recommendation of Harbormaster Kenneth Corson.
Assistant harbormasters work under the supervision of the harbormaster, providing responsible enforcement work in the protection of the town’s waterways and natural resources.
“We’re expecting a busy season following a mild winter,” Corson told the Select Board, who approved the appointments. “The harbor is beginning to fill up.”
Bradford Betzner and Michael Nash will both serve as assistant harbormasters for their fourth year, while Hingham High School graduate Cameron Lumbard — a former Hingham Maritime Center instructor who holds a safety boating certificate — and HHS student Charlie Sichol, who grew up boating with his family and “has a passion for being out on the water,” will fill a limited role of Assistant Harbormaster/Harbor Attendant this summer, according to Corson.
Charlie also holds a safety boating certificate and a United States Coast Guard launch tender operator’s license. Lumbard is familiar with Hingham waters and is comfortable operating power boats.
Their duties will include operating the pump-out boat, collecting mooring rental fees, checking on the islands off Hingham Harbor, assisting boaters who are docking at the Town Landing and with maintaining equipment, and maintaining harbor watches and radio guard, among other duties assigned by Corson.
James Tian, a sworn Special Police Officer in Hingham, who works details and special events around town and is a certified Commonwealth police officer, will have full authority as an assistant harbormaster and police officer.
