There were arguably two players on Hingham baseball that could haven’t gotten this award this week. Late inning, game winning heroics are certainly worthy, but this week’s Athlete of the Week presented by College Hype has been the model of clutch hitting and consistency throughout the whole season, especially last week. In three games, facing their toughest stretch all season, senior Alex McGowan went 8 for 11 at the plate, hitting two doubles and driving in four runs. He went 4 for 4 in Monday’s game vs Marshfield in a tough 8-7 loss. Then against the top two teams in the league, Plymouth North and Whitman-Hanson, he went 2 for 3 and 2 for 4, respectively, as the Harbormen upset Plymouth North 11-1 and Whitman-Hanson 8-7 in back to back games.
His astounding .723 average last week improved his season average by .67 points and is projected to be in the top 5 in the league in hitting this week. Alex leads the team in total hits, doubles, triples, OBP and slugging percentage. He’s also contributed in the field making timely outs in right field.
“He’s been very reliable at the plate,” says senior captain Jake Schulte. “He’s the guy you want up in the big spot. Alex is also a great competitor and brings good energy on the field and in the dugout.”
Hingham will head down to Whitman-Hanson today for a rainout make-up game in the second of a home and home series with the Panthers. If Friday’s game is any indication, this should be a highly competitive and entertaining rematch to watch.
Congrats Alex!
