This Saturday’s Masterworks Classical concert by the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra—which started out years ago as the Hingham Civic Orchestra—features guest cellist Claire Deokyonng Kim playing Tchaikovsky, to go with Mozart and Beethoven.
The concert at Braintree’s beautiful Thayer Center for the Arts, at 745 Washington St., features Ms. Kim and the Atlantic on the Russian master’s Variation on a Rococo Theme, along with the orchestra’s take Mozart’s Divertimento in D. The program-closing Beethoven Symphony No. 2 continues ASO maestro Jin Kim’s ambitious program of featuring all nine Beethoven classics, spread over three seasons.
Audiences have thrilled to the ever-popular Beethoven’s Fifth, and the Beethoven First, in previous concerts, as the ASO plans to complete the nine-symphony cycle in concerts to come.
South Korean-born Ms. Kim, no relation to the conductor, has been building a magnificent career for herself, winning the top prizes ranging from the Seoul Arts Center Musical Prodigy Competition to New England Conservatory’s Lower String Competition—with the latter prize leading to a solo performance with the NEC Philharmonia Orchestra at Boston’s Jordan Hall. Last year, she made her Symphony Hall debut with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops.
As she advances her career as a soloist, the 25-year-old Ms. Kim currently is studying under Laurence Lesser at NEC.
Maestro Kim notes that the Saturday concert, beginning at 7:30 p.m., continues the ASO’s “Mostly Mozart” theme, even though only one of the three works is his.
