As food insecurity continues to impact South Shore communities, Keohane Funeral Home, in collaboration with Interfaith Social Services, Weymouth Food Pantry, and The Friends of Holly Hill Farm, are proud to announce Plant.Grow.Share. – a series of free container garden workshops aimed at empowering local residents with the skills and resources needed to grow their own produce. Now in its 14th year, South Shore residents are then encouraged to donate a portion of their garden bounty to local food banks, which are in constant need of fresh produce.
The workshops, spanning Quincy, Weymouth, and Hingham, will offer novice growers an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of container gardening, from seed to fruition, over these 45-to-60-minute sessions. Led by esteemed local farmer Jon Belber of Friends of Holly Hill Farm, participants will gain insights into the cultivation of kale, this year’s featured container vegetable seedling provided by Keohane.
The events aim to revolutionize perceptions of kale, showcasing its versatility through engaging activities such as kale chip tasting sessions. Kale was chosen because of its nutritional value and usefulness, as well as being a very reliable plant to grow in this region.
RSVPS are required by email at events@keohane.com or phone: 1-800-KEOHANE (800-536-4263). Workshops are free to attend at the following locations.
5/14 (Tuesday) Weymouth Library at 6pm
5/23 (Thursday) Hingham Library at 6pm
5/29 (Wednesday) Quincy Kennedy Senior Center at 1pm
For Keohane, the initiative represents a commitment to community welfare. “It just goes along with being a good community partner,” says John Keohane. “We’ve been big fans of Interfaith and Weymouth Food Pantry for many, many years. They both do amazing work, and to have Jon there to teach people a skill is just amazing to witness.”
Each participant will walk away from the workshop with a complete seedling ready to grow, a small but impactful step towards empowering local community self-sufficiency. This initiative helps both Weymouth Food Pantry and Interfaith Social Services amplify their efforts to provide fresh, nutritious food to those in need.
