Syma: 50 Years of Clay: Stories Yet to Be Told

May 28, 2024 Submitted by The Gallery at Linden Ponds

From June 7-29, The Gallery at Linden Ponds will feature a retrospective covering the works of Syma, a clay and mixed media artist from New York City. Syma (formerly known as Marsha Syma Gordon Komarin Afia) was a Hingham resident for more than 30 years before departing in 2003 for London, and then New York City. She just turned 80.

Inspired by ancient magical artifacts and mythologies, Syma’s interactive/conceptual clay sculptures, vessels, jewelry, and gallery installations are created as participatory spiritual and ceremonial objects that respond to wishes, dreams, and worries.

Syma’s work has been featured at the Carter Burden Gallery in New York and South Shore Art Center in Cohasset, MA. She has been a teaching artist at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art since 1999. Her ceramic jewelry has also been featured at London, England’s Lesley Craze Gallery. In Hingham, she ran the Birds Nest Gallery and teaching space, which was a showcase for local artists and crafts people. Her portfolio is available at Symastudios.com.

“The Hingham/South Shore community nurtured and encouraged me when I needed it most, helping me to launch a career that spans five decades as artist/educator. I’m delighted to be able to return to share early works as well as new works with some of the amazing people who have been part of my journey,” said Syma.

The exhibition at The Gallery at Linden Ponds runs from June 7-29, 2024, and is open from 8 am – 8pm. The Gallery at Linden Ponds is located in the Derby Clubhouse, 203 Linden Ponds Way, Hingham, MA. A Public Reception & Artist’s Talk will be held in the Seasons catering room at the Derby Clubhouse on Thursday, June 20 at 3 pm.
