Hingham residents are in for a sweet treat this summer as Kids’ Cabaret announced auditions for its production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Kids’ Cabaret is a non-profit theater organization that allows children between ages 8 and 16 to develop and showcase their acting, dancing and singing skills.
Auditions are on Thursday, June 6th and Friday, June 7th from 4-8 p.m., at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hingham. Kids are only required to attend one of the dates and can drop in anytime during the audition periods.
Actors are expected to sing and act at the audition. They can perform either “Willy Wonka! Willy Wonka!” (0:10-0:38), or “Pure Imagination” (0:30-1:08). The show’s staff suggests that actors use the following karaoke links to prepare: Willy Wonka! Willy Wonka! Pure Imagination
There is also a dance portion of the audition that is not mandatory but strongly recommended, especially for those interested in a lead role.
The entire staff is comprised of unpaid high school and college students who have an interest in theater.
Bridget Sandler, co-program director and acting director of the production, enjoys the fact that everyone who auditions is able to participate in the show.
“No matter what, everyone is welcome in our cast.”
Children with all levels of experience are encouraged to join the cast.
Rehearsals start on June 10th. All cast rehearsals will be held on Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m., while specific actors will be called on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Every week, an email will be sent to parents detailing when their child is expected.
Kids’ Cabaret costs $200 per child, which goes towards the production cost. Each actor will also receive a free t-shirt.
Sandler commends the welcoming environment that Kids’ Cabaret has provided for over 30 years. She believes there are many benefits to joining the organization.
“It’s easy to be intimidated at first, but I think Kids’ Cabaret is the perfect environment for kids to gain more confidence all around,” she said.
The production will run at Hingham High School on Thursday, July 25th, Friday, July 26th and Saturday, July 27th.
