This delightful view of Hingham Square was taken by George Stetson and was printed in the book Hingham Old and New by the Hingham Tercentenary Committee. On the left is Barba’s Market which had a Pool Parlor on the second floor. To the right across the Main Street, known as ‘Broad Bridge,’ is the Lincoln Building with Kitty Hennessey’s “Boston Cash Market” on the ground floor. In the Sprague Building (now the Pride Building) was Dykeman’s Pharmacy. Southworth’s Pharmacy was diagonally across the square from Dykeman’s. At Dykeman’s, Hennessey’s and Southworth’s you could get ice cream. Barba’s and Hennessey’s both have signs advertising a phone inside. And in those days the train traveled above ground through the square. The original photo is in the Hingham Historical Society archives along with several postcards it was made into.
