Public input sought on potential uses for 30 Summer Street property

September 3, 2024 By Carol Britton Meyer

A survey recently posted on the town website asks residents to share their ideas for potential uses of the 30 Summer St. waterfront property purchased by the town in November 2023. Hard copies will be available at the library and the Center for Active Living.

The select board discussed and approved the survey in principle at a recent meeting, with plans to run that version by the Harbor Development Committee — which suggested the survey — for possible changes or additions before posting it. That accomplished, residents are encouraged to respond.

The survey provides an opportunity for residents to express a preference for various options and to also share their ideas and comments.

The $1.25-million property includes a 1,400-square-foot building located on a 0.2-acre lot that can accommodate approximately five parking spaces. There is no access to the waterfront from the property at this time.

Following a review of survey results, the HDC will make a recommendation to the select board on how best to use the property and to align its use with Hingham’s broader planning goals.

Possible municipal uses that have been floated by stakeholders and members of the community include Hingham Rec classes, harbormaster offices, a welcome center with public restrooms, and razing the building to create a public parking lot or a public park area, among others.

Other possibilities could include leasing the property to a private user for a restaurant, office, bank, marina, retailer, or art gallery.
These are all suggested possible uses only, and no decisions have yet been made.

“There are numerous opportunities, and it will be useful to see how members of the public view this property,” Select Board Chair Joseph Fisher said.

Board member William Ramsey agreed. “Hearing  ideas [from the public] will help ensure the property will be used by as many residents as possible.”

Board member Liz Klein explained that her “ideal vision” for 30 Summer St.  is “a longterm plan that benefits the community, while in the short-term making some money on it to cover the debt service [for this purchase].”

Residents are encouraged to respond to a survey at https://www.hingham-ma.gov/FormCenter/Select-Board-15/30-Summer-Street-Questionnaire-99.
