Each season starts with a clean slate. New team, new opponents, and new chance to start over. The Hingham girls volleyball team took full advantage of their new season on Wednesday afternoon as they opened up their 2024 campaign at home vs Cohasset.
The Harborwomen looked strong in most facets of their game through the first two sets winning easily 25-7 and 25-10. Cohasset kept it close for a most of the third set before Hingham pulled away 25-15.
The Harborwomen’s service game and net play impressed second year head coach Jordan Lay the most.
“I loved our serving,” Lay said after the 3-0 win. “It’s been an emphasis this preseason. Really controlling what we can control, and serving is a big part of that. I thought we dictated the pace on the service line and hit the zones we wanted to. I thought our net play was pretty good. Overall, I was really happy on how we came out of the blocks.”
An early improvement in this team is that they showed their ability to close out a match, something they had some trouble with last year.
“We started the third set a little shaky,” Lay went on to say. “It was a little like deja vu. But what I really appreciated is that they rallied around each other and pushed to get back in control of the set. We talked about this in the timeout that we understand early in the season like this is a good lesson to learn that we can’t have slow starts, especially in the third set.”
It was a good win to kick things off this year. Outside hitter and potential league MVP candidate Kaitlyn Truong looked good as she starts her final season. Junior Meghan Koenen made an impact both offensively and defensively around the next and senior Clara Reive had a few long stretches of service wins for the Harborwomen.
“I just really happy the way the team battled and persevered through the match.”
