Last week, Hingham Middle School’s Unified Sports program was recognized by Special Olympics Massachusetts for its excellence in promoting inclusion, advocacy, and respect. This distinction highlights the school’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment through sports.
Hingham Middle School offered Unified Bocce Ball last fall, and hopes to expand their participation in the Unified sports program in the future, bringing together students with and without intellectual disabilities to compete as teammates. The program helps build confidence and friendships while promoting a sense of belonging for all participants.
Ashley Baxter and Casey Giordani, seventh-grade math teachers, highlight the significance of Unified Sports in promoting inclusivity, stating, “Unified Sports encourages athletes of all abilities to compete together, breaking down barriers and promoting acceptance. Participants often form meaningful relationships, helping to create a more supportive and connected community. The athletes develop not only physical skills but also teamwork, communication, and leadership abilities. All students gained self-esteem through participation and achievement, both on and off the field.”
Hingham Middle School Principal Derek Smith shared, “The Unified Sports program highlights the best of what our students and school can be. I am so proud of the work done last year and look forward to building on it in the future.”
