Harbormen Improve to 3-1 With Win over Plymouth North

Hingham football propels themselves to an exciting 34-21 win over Plymouth North. The first quarter proved to be a back-and-forth game. Hingham senior captain Ryan St. Croix rushed in for a two-yard touchdown early in the 1st to give Hingham a 7-0 lead. Plymouth North responded with a touchdown of their own, now tied 7-7 over Hingham. With only a minute to go in the quarter, junior Quarterback Jake Varholak found the endzone with his legs to give Hingham a 14-7 lead. Very late in the quarter, Plymouth struck again with a rushing touchdown to tie the game 14-14 going into the 2nd.

The second quarter started off strong for Hingham on the defensive end. With 6:00 left in the quarter, Varholak found the endzone once again with his legs. To end the quarter, senior Fin O’Brien intercepted Plymouth North, going onto Plymouth territory. However, Hingham was not able to capitalize on the interception. Going into the half, Hingham had a 21-14 lead.

Senior captain Ryan St. Croix had 26 rushes for 144 yards and 2 TDs on Friday night.

The third quarter consisted of Plymouth finding the endzone through a rushing touchdown to tie the game once again, 21-21. Hingham now wanted to find a way to pull away going into the fourth. And Hingham did just that.

St.Croix started off the quarter strong for Hingham, giving them another rushing touchdown. Leading 28-21, the Habormen was able to cause a turnover on downs to gain the ball right back. The Harbormen capitalized on the turnover, with a third rushing touchdown from Varholak. A late Fin O’Brien interception sealed the 34-21 win over Plymouth North.

When asked about the offensive production of the team, Coach T.J Byrne expressed his happiness. He explained how, “Where we are at this early in this season, the offense is playing really well…They are moving the chains, they are keeping the clock running, and dictating our game of play. They give the other team pressure to score.”

Junior QB Jake Varholak with 3 more rushing TDs on Friday, adding to his season totals of over 1,200 all purpose yards and 12 TDs.

On the defensive end, Coach Byrne explained the highs and lows of the game. “Its good to come out of this with a win, but our secondary had some coverage breakdowns there in the first half…We were doing a good job controlling the run, but we lost guys in coverage. It was back and forth and games never go as you expect.”
