Way Back Wednesday: Jesse Sprague’s House

October 9, 2024 by Geri Duff

This photograph shows the original 284 Main Street location of a house built in 1771 and is now at 77 Leavitt Street at the corner of Village Lane. It was moved there in 1888. Even though it was known locally as Jesse Sprague’s house, the last Sprague to live here was Elijah Sprague who died in 1864 at the age of 91. The house was moved to make way for the Little Plain Market, which later became the First National. That building was torn down to build the Carnes Block, the building the Atlantic Bagel is in today. The Photograph is in the Julian Loring Collection at the Hingham Historical Society Archives
