Way Back Wednesday: The Hingham Stone

December 11, 2024 By Geri Duff

Next to the Old Ship Meeting House is the Memorial Bell Tower and inside is a large rock from Hingham, England, which people used to step up onto their horses. It was sent to Hingham, MA in 1911 as a gift. In Hingham England, when accepting the stone that the people of Hingham, MA sent back in 1913, Rev. Louis Cornish said: “may the stones exchanged between the Hinghams be steppingstones to closer friendships between Anglo-Saxon people.” I heard this story when I was a child and worried that the people in England wouldn’t be able to get on their horses without the stone. I never knew that we had sent one back. This photograph is from the George W. Stetson Collection at the Hingham Historical Society.
