For the second consecutive weekend, South Shore SNAP sponsored a community service project, this time being joined by the local chapter of the DAR and other volunteers to honor deceased veterans.
As part of the nationwide Wreathes Across America Program, the local groups placed 1050 wreathes on the graves of veterans in St. Paul’s Cemetery. The cemetery was one of 4909 sites in all 50 states and U.S. territories where over 3.5 million wreathes were placed.
Hingham has six cemeteries that include the graves of 3600 veterans. Each year SNAP raises funds through generous sponsors (including the DAR chapter) and rotates the placement among the six cemeteries. Last year wreaths were placed at the High Street and Fort Hill cemeteries so Liberty Plain, Hingham Centre and Old Ship are on the docket for 2025.
The wreathes are manufactured in Columba Falls, Maine and trucked by volunteer trucking companies to all locations. The Hingham shipment arrived two days prior to the placement and six Hingham Police Officers unloaded 89 boxes of 12 wreathes each into the Lynch Field House for storage until placement.
In addition to all the volunteers feeling great about their efforts, they were all treated to home made cookies baked by the DAR members.
