Tonight, Thursday, July 25, 2019, is Kids' Cabaret's opening performance of Roald Dahl's "James and the Giant Peach" at Hingham High School.
Kids' Cabaret is a non-profit organization that gives Hingham's youth a chance to immerse themselves in the art of theater, music, and dance and perform in a full-length musical. This teen-run program was started 30 years ago in 1989 and provides young adults the opportunity to direct, produce, choreograph, paint, design, build, teach, conduct and play for the musical performance.
Led by Casey Hussey, the team of teenagers who are directing and producing this year's show are all alumni of Kids' Cabaret and are enjoying watching the next generation of performers have their turn on stage.
When asked about how it feels to direct the show that she performed in for so many years, Hussey tells The Anchor, "It's surreal to direct a show with the company that I participated in as a child. I’ve been performing on this exact stage for almost 10 years now and tonight I get to watch nearly 100 children do what I’ve done year after year, except this time it’s with the steps and blocking that I and many others have spent an entire month creating and putting together."
In addition to the performance aspect, strong friendships are formed and unforgettable memories are made every rehearsal.
"Kids cabaret was so much fun because I met new friends and as time went on, I got to know them. If I hadn’t done Cabaret, I wouldn’t have had such a great experience," says nine year old Maya Hobson of her experience in the show.
"Theatre is so magical, whether you are an audience member, actor, crew hand, or director, and I’ve truly witnessed that this summer from having the opportunity to explore almost every aspect," says Hussey.
There are three shows, Thursday July 25th, Friday, July 26th and Saturday, July 27th at Hingham High School. Doors open at 6:30 and the show starts promptly at 7:00. Tickets can be purchased at the door. $7 children/seniors, $10 adults
