In an email message to the Hingham Middle School community this morning, Principal Derek Smith addressed concerns about the school and safety that have come to his attention.

On Wednesday afternoon, March 12, a student — “speaking out of frustration, made a remark alluding to bringing a gun to school,” Smith explained.

School officials immediately met with the student “and quickly determined that they spoke inappropriately and out of frustration,” Smith said. “We then followed up with the parents of the student, who continued this important conversation at home. The incident was addressed promptly, and the investigation indicated no threat to our school community.”

Since then, middle school officials have become aware of escalating rumors about this comment.

“Please be assured that at this point we have communicated with the parents and caregivers of those who we know to have heard the statement and have confirmed that there is no danger to our school,” the email states. “HMS administrators and educators will continue to provide reassurance that our school is a safe place and that all reported incidents are investigated and addressed in a timely manner.”
