Parents interested in hearing advice and tips on how to address the challenges associated with social media with their children — and others who are also interested in this topic — are invited to attend a panel discussion, “Going Viral: Navigating Social Media as a Parent,” Thursday, Oct. 10, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Hingham High School auditorium.
The event, which is co-sponsored by the Hingham Anchor, will be moderated by Evan Shuman, who is part of the Gail Bell Group at Compass and the Assembly Showroom, a retail shop for men and women on North Street in downtown Hingham.
Panelists, who will talk and share ideas about the impacts of social media and best practices, include Hingham’s Asst. Supt. of Schools Jamie LaBillois; Hingham High School Resource Officer Tom Ford; Courtney Doyle, CEO of Clandestine Kitchen and a Hingham parent; and Emily Miller, LMHC, of The Center for Integrative Counseling & Wellness.
“We are bringing together people who will lend a good voice to this issue,” Shuman said.
He explained how he came up with this idea. “I wanted to start creating different types of events for people who have moved to Hingham from the city or other locations, because as great as it is to live here, there isn’t always as much access to events such as this one,” he said. “The social media issue affects parents, the schools, and others, and I wanted to create a forum to talk about different topics.”
This is the first such event. “With regard to social media, it’s like the Wild West out there,” Shuman said. “We’re hoping that those who attend will leave with a better understanding of the impacts of social media and take away some oversight practices and resources they can speak with for any reason about this topic [in the future].”
There will be time for questions at the end of the panel discussion. “This should be a fun and informative evening,” Shuman said.
