Last month, South Shore Conservatory (SSC) kicked off summer with the first family-friendly event of the season – Shake It Off @ SSC sing-along concert. Everywhere you looked there were happy kids in colorful, glittery outfits, having their hair colored with chalk, or making bracelets, or posing for a picture playing inflatable instruments, or singing and moving along with music they love. There wasn’t a grumpy face in the crowd. Even a white-bearded grandfather got into the act, much to the delight of his granddaughter, allowing us to transform his facial hair into a beautiful bushy rainbow.
As families came up to us to collect their popsicles at the end of the concert, everyone asked when they could do this again! We love that our wonderful SSC families let us know how much they appreciate and look forward to events they can share with their kids. Their excitement inspires us to find fun, new programs for all ages to enjoy.
Our next family program is Saturday, July 20, as we present “Wild Symphony,” a musical, interactive story by critically acclaimed author Dan Brown. This live concert experience takes listeners inside the animal kingdom, detailing the adventures of Maestro Mouse and his symphonic friends! From the playful “Bouncing Kangaroo” to the majestic “Ponderous Pachyderm,” each movement of the piece, performed by local music educators in the Commonwealth Wind Symphony and members of SSC faculty, introduces children and adults to a delightful menagerie of musical animals. During the performances, families may follow along with their own complimentary copy of the book which is meant as a keepsake to enjoy long after the last note trills. Former SSC preschool teacher Margaret Curtis narrates the piece.
After the concert, families are invited to partake in an instrumental petting zoo, creative craft stations, face painting and balloon fun, and sweet treats. General admission tickets to this concert, the third of four Evenings Under the Stars performances this summer, are available at https://summer.sscmusic.org/eus/.
