This week’s Athlete of the Week presented by College Hype is junior Mike Karo. Mike is the starting goaltender for the Hingham Harbormen and has been one of the top net-minders in the state, not only recently, but the entire season. His last week and half started off with a win in the Buddy Ferriera Classic in Falmouth where he stopped 30 shots and helped the Harbormen beat BC High for the first time in 15 years. He then opened the playoffs up with a shutout with fellow goaltender James Whitmore. In Hingham’s tough 2-1 OT loss on Sunday night vs St. John’s Shrewsbury, his performance in net kept the Harbormen in the game for the first period and a half.
“Mike always gives us a chance to win,” says head coach Tony Messina. “He was dialed-in against BC High. The team played confidently knowing he would be there when needed”
Senior captain Colin Lasch felt Mike’s impact both on and off the ice throughout the season.
“Mike was phenomenal for us the entire season,” Lasch says. “He stood on his head several times and kept us in tight games. He stepped into a major vocal role. He used his voice every day and motivated and pushed everyone to be their best. He’s an amazing goalie with a bright future.”
