The holiday season in Hingham would not be complete without the annual Christmas Tree Drive, organized by the Troop 1 Boy Scouts. As one of the oldest scout troops in America, with over 110 years of history, the troop has always relied on fundraising efforts to support its activities and maintain their Scout house near Turkey Hill. The annual Tree Drive has become a crucial aspect of these efforts, providing necessary resources while fostering a sense of civic responsibility among the scouts.
The Tree Drive’s impact extends beyond the scout troop, benefiting the local community in many ways. The scouts often help elderly residents remove their trees from their homes and some of the Christmas trees collected are used for the annual early January bonfire hosted by The Trustee’s at Weir River Farm. The remaining trees soon become mulch with the help of the Hingham Transfer Station where they are “recycled”. The entire scout troop participates in the three-day tree drive, enjoying all of the camaraderie, and ensuring the success of this yearly event.
When
Tree collection will take place on Saturday January 4th, Sunday January 5th, and Saturday January 11th this year. A donation of $15 is much appreciated, and funds raised go directly to support Hingham Scouts.
