Several boys playing at a baseball field found what they believed to be a gun. They did the right thing, they didn't touch it and instead told a parent who called 9-1-1. Officers determined it was actually a BB gun that was the same shape and size as an actual handgun.
On Friday, September 25, 2020 at 1:15pm Officers were sent to Hersey Field on Thaxter Street for a report that several kids had found a gun hidden in the woods. Three 13 year old boys had been playing baseball at the field and went into the adjoining woods looking for their baseball when they found what looked like a black handgun hidden between two trees. They did not touch the gun and instead told one a parent. The parent looked at it and then called 9-1-1. Officers could see it was actually a BB gun and removed it.
These boys did they right thing in not touching what they believed was a gun and instead telling an adult. A photo of the BB gun (in the bottom of the picture) they found is compared to our service weapon carried by Hingham Officers. We encourage parents to use this as a discussion about what to do if their child finds a firearm (including while in a home).
