We all look forward to our special holiday traditions, and the teachers, students, and staff at Old Colony Montessori School (OCMS) are no exception. For the past three years, the teachers and staff have dedicated their December staff meeting to make lunches for Father Bill’s Mainspring. The families generously donate all the fixings for over fifty brown-bagged lunches, which are then delivered to Father Bill’s Mainspring in Quincy. These lunches are distributed to those experiencing food and housing insecurity. Head of School, Tracey Tuthill Buckeridge, expresses, “It’s a great way to give back, and it’s a fun team-building activity.”
As holiday shopping commences at OCMS, the Elementary Level students take charge of hosting a holiday sale for all students. Families contribute by donating items for the holiday sale, creating a diverse selection of gifts for students to choose from. What makes the holiday sale truly special is that the Elementary Level students actively vote and decide on which charitable organization will receive the proceeds from the holiday fair. In the past, recipients have included notable organizations such as Boston Children’s Hospital and Habitat for Humanity.
“I love the Holiday Shopping Spree! It’s a lot of work because we have to decorate our whole classroom and that takes hours, but it’s fun to shop with the little kids. Then our class votes on which charity to give the money too. The charities always seem really happy when we give them the money.”- Caroline Moore (age 7)
For the past 60 years, OCMS has been nurturing lifelong learners, serving children ages 18 months to 9 years old. Old Colony Montessori School is the oldest Montessori institution south of Boston and is one of the only AMI (Association Montessori International) certified Montessori schools in the area. OCMS students develop a natural love of learning that lasts a lifetime, and approach the world with self-confidence, intellectual curiosity, joy, and respect.
