Despite the rain on Wednesday, the Center for Active Living was full of brightness. A celebration of new beginnings for the center as the new name and new logo were officially unveiled. An afternoon filled with food, music, face painting, photo booth, and giveaways, was kicked off with a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the official change for the center.
Select Board members Joe Fisher and chair Liz Klein spoke on how important the center is to not only the senior population in town, but for the whole community. Council on Aging board member Leon Merian thanked everyone for attending, despite the weather. Executive Director of the Center for Active Living Jennifer Young explained how Elder Services has been running the center for the past 26 years. She talked about how the center currently supports almost 1,200 member visits participating in close to 2,500 programming events a year, emphasizing that they serve the whole community, not just a certain demographic. Lastly, she elaborated on the future plans of the center. Whether that will be a renovation of their current space or a brand new building in Bare Cove, the goal of the staff, the Council on Aging, and the community is focused on supporting the citizens who deserve a place that meets all their immediate and future needs. Klein announced that the next steps in that process has already happened with the selection of a firm to complete the feasibility study of a new center.
In order to continue to bring awareness of the center’s current programming, as well as future needs, Young announced the center’s new brand ambassador program. These spokespeople will be at future community events answering questions and promoting the center. The newly created Friends of the Center for Active Living (FOCAL) group will also be a welcomed independent organization helping to raise awareness and funds for the center in the very near future.
