In honor of Earth Day 2023, Cleaner Greener Hingham is organizing a town-wide cleanup day on Saturday April 22 nd between 9-11 am. Groups are encouraged to take a walk at any point over that weekend and clean up your neighborhood, playground, ball field or any place in town where you have noticed discarded trash. If you would like to sign-up for this in advance, please click here to pre-register and let us know where you are planning to clean up. And if you can’t take part over the Earth Day weekend, please feel free to show your care for the earth any time this spring. Every little bit of trash picked up is important.
New this year is a partnership with an environmental group called Wild Cohasset who has been working to educate citizens about the importance of eliminating the spread of invasive non-native weeds in Cohasset. Invasive weeds don’t know town borders so Wild Cohasset has spread into Scituate and Norwell and is now reaching out to residents in Hingham asking for help to get rid of a particularly noxious weed called garlic mustard. Please read this recent article in the Hingham Anchor about this effort. Garlic mustard is particularly harmful to the environment because it chokes out native plants that support a huge range of wildlife including hummingbirds, songbirds, bees and other pollinating insects. While your group is out picking up trash, please keep an eye out for garlic mustard and if you find it, please pull the whole plant out by the roots and toss the whole thing (roots, stems, and leaves) into the trash.
Teams are asked to take all trash to the Hingham Transfer Station. If you use social media, please take a photo and post it on the “A Sustainable Hingham” page and other Hingham pages of your choice and tag #cleanergreenerhingham and #earthday2023.
You can contact cl************@hi********.gov with any questions or for more information. Cleaner Greener Hingham is the nickname of the town of Hingham’s Long Range Waste Disposal and Recycling Committee (LRWDRC). Our goal is to keep Hingham clean and green by educating the community about proper trash disposal, waste reduction, backyard composting, re-use options, and the many ways to recycle at our Transfer Station. Recycling saves the town money on trash disposal and in some cases, generates revenue for the town. Together we can keep Hingham cleaner and greener.
