July 1, 2024 By Cleaner Greener Hingham
The Cleaner Greener Hingham Committee will be hosting a free beginner composting workshop at the Hingham Public Library on July 9th at 7pm. Composting is a great summer project for individuals, families, or neighborhoods looking to reduce their carbon footprint and food waste. And there is the added benefit of improved soil for gardeners!
Why compost at home?
Did you know that approximately 30% of our waste stream is compostable food scraps and paper? That means that 30% of what is thrown away in Hingham could be recycled, thereby reducing the amount of waste that residents pay to incinerate. In addition to helping the planet, composting at home is a way to control rising waste disposal costs by removing these items from our waste stream.
What do I need to get started?
Cleaner Greener Hingham’s free composting workshop will teach you all you need to know to make compost in your backyard without attracting rodents or creating odors. If you would like to order a specialized composting bin, the Hingham Department of Public Works sells subsidized compost bins for $25. To order your bin, call (781) 741-1430. No equipment is necessary to participate in this workshop.
Hmmm – I’m interested, but I can’t compost at home.
That’s ok! Cleaner Greener Hingham is working toward composting solutions that will work for all residents! Please fill out our survey to make your needs known. (And please pass it along to your friends and neighbors).
Who is Cleaner Greener Hingham?
Cleaner Greener Hingham is a group of Hingham residents volunteering their time to make our community a more environmentally-friendly place. We advocate for reducing waste by educating residents about proper recycling of household items and food scraps. We also advocate for bylaws that remove single use items from our community. Our meetings are open to the public via Zoom with agendas posted here. We hope you will join us!
