February 5, 2025 By Janice McPhillips
Did you make any new year’s resolutions to do something that benefits the environment in 2025? How about being more mindful of your household’s waste? If this idea appeals to you, consider adding composting your household food scraps to your routine.
Cleaner Greener Hingham will be hosting a free winter composting workshop at the Hingham Public Library on February 12th at 7pm. This interactive session, led by Hingham residents Janice McPhillips and Peter Swanson, will give you the tools to begin recycling your food scraps at home using either a worm composting bin or a Bokashi bucket. These are strategies that work particularly well in the winter when composting outside may not work. Composting is a great all-season project for individuals, families, or neighborhoods looking to reduce their carbon footprint and food waste. And there is the added benefit of improved soil for gardeners!
Why compost at home?
Did you know that approximately 30% of our waste stream is compostable food scraps and paper? That means that 30% of what is thrown away in Hingham could be recycled, thereby reducing the amount of waste that residents pay to incinerate. In addition to helping the planet, composting at home is a way to control rising waste disposal costs by removing these items from our waste stream.
What do I need to get started?
Cleaner Greener Hingham’s free composting workshop will teach you all you need to know to make compost at home this winter without attracting rodents or creating odors. No equipment is necessary to participate and DIY instructions will be shared at the workshop.
Hmmm – I’m interested, but I can’t compost at home.
That’s ok! Cleaner Greener Hingham is working toward composting solutions that will work for all residents! Please fill out our survey to make your needs known. (And please pass it along to your friends and neighbors).
Who is Cleaner Greener Hingham?
Cleaner Greener Hingham is a group of Hingham residents volunteering their time to make our community a more environmentally-friendly place. We advocate for reducing waste by educating residents about proper recycling of household items and food scraps. We also advocate for bylaws that remove single use items from our community. Our meetings are open to the public via Zoom with agendas posted here. We hope you will join us!
