February 14, 2024 By Derby Academy
Strong academics, small class sizes, and exceptional faculty are some of the obvious differentiators. However, there are many things that set Derby uniquely apart. You might say “it’s the little things” like the amount of hours spent outside exploring our expansive campus during multiple recess periods per day for all grade levels and 2-4 PE classes per week. Or it may be the specials for our youngest students in Art, Music, PE, Library, and Spanish and the required opportunities our 4th and 5th graders experience by participating in band/string ensemble, chorus, wood shop, and sewing.
In addition, all of our 6th graders take part in the 6th grade musical! The many elective opportunities in STEAM, visual and performing arts, and athletics available to our 6-8 grade students ensures that coming to school each day is something each student looks forward to. With this model each child is able to feel safe taking risks to discover and experience opportunities to shine! A Pre-Kindergarten through grade 8 educational environment fosters community and leadership growth, while keeping even our oldest students young.
Last but not least, we understand the relationship between social/emotional well-being and educational success. We are dedicated to our research-based and Derby-created SEL curricula which covers topics such as inclusivity, growth mindset, worry, confidence, empathy, stress management, digital citizenship, and leadership to name a few. We not only discuss such topics, we strive to weave them into our daily language and conversations.
There are many more examples to demonstrate why Derby should be the first choice when considering educational options on the South Shore, and we invite prospective families to join us at an upcoming event to learn more.
