In response to reports of recent drone sightings in town, especially this weekend, Select Board member William Ramsey spoke with Hingham Police Chief David Jones about the issue Sunday night.

“The chief informed me that the HPD is working with state and federal law enforcement partners about appropriate next steps,” Ramsey told the Hingham Anchor. “We will pass along any additonal information we receive to citizens as it becomes available.”

Sightings were reported near Plymouth River School, the middle school, the Weir River, and Hingham Harbor — “shining bright lights” — as well as over Hull on the Hingham Hub Facebook page.

Drones have become a topic of concern locally as well as in other parts of the country.

Jones told the Hingham Anchor that drones can fly during the day and during the night “as long as they aren’t in restricted areas and are within the line of sight of the operator — it’s completely legal.”

That said, HPD would be concerned if drones were seen flying “over critical infrastructure or in restricted areas, such as Logan flight paths,” he explained.
