East School Plant Wall

East Elementary School unveiled a stunning new addition to their school this week: a live plant wall panel in the 5th-grade hall. The brainchild of Para Educator Mark Rulli and 5th grade teacher Julie Curatola the vertical garden is not just aesthetically pleasing, it’s educational too!

Made up of various low-maintenance plants like ferns, vines, and lilies, the wall adds a touch of nature to the school’s interior.  Mark Rulli says the project is a great way to practice what we teach. “It’s important to use plants to create healthier living spaces.”

The wall was made possible by many donations.  Some are from local companies like Hingham Lumber who gave building supplies to the project as well as a local woodworking hobbyist at DMD Wood Designs.

But the benefits go beyond aesthetics. Mark explains, “The plants help purify the air in the building, improving concentration and even reducing stress. Our vision is to give students a place to reflect for a minute or two during the day”  The 5th graders are taking the lead on caring for the plants, giving them hands-on experience with plant science.

The principal, Jonathan Hawes, is thrilled with the new addition. “It was so great to see a concept that was discussed and researched in class come to life in our hallways.  We’re grateful to Mr. Rulli, those that donated, our custodial team, and the student volunteers who gave up their time to complete this project. They’ve created a wonderful addition to our school!

East School’s plant wall is sure to be a talking point for students, staff, and visitors alike. It’s a vibrant reminder that even a small school can make a big impact on its environment and the well-being of its students.
