Welcome to “Five Minutes With” — Anchor’s new feature to help us get to know our neighbors. Everyone has a unique story to tell, so let’s get to know each other a bit more! Have someone you’d love to spend five minutes getting to know? Email us at info@hinghamanchor.com.
Carol Britton Meyer recently connected with the Anchor’s Josh Ross. You can learn more about the different roles he has in the community, his hidden talent, and favorite local spot.
Role in community: Managing Sports Editor/Photographer Hingham Anchor; Board of Assessors, Chair; Council on Aging, member; Hingham Arts Alliance, board member
What your work involves: Most of my time is spent taking photos of Hingham High School sporting events, although I do photograph other things from time to time. The Board of Assessors is responsible for fairly assessing real and personal property as well as overseeing a number of tax relief programs. Think of the Council on Aging as the School Committee for the Center for Active Living. Our main focus for the next few years is to advocate for a new center at Bare Cove Park. The Hingham Arts Alliance was formed a few years back to advocate for and promote the arts in Hingham.
Your favorite part of what you do: My involvement around town for the past decade has given me access to special events of not only my own two kids, but all their friends and classmates — sporting events, plays, concerts, field days, proms, graduations.
They trust me to document some of the most important times in their lives, and I’m grateful they let me do it without that much complaining.
What you hope to/have accomplished so far as a town volunteer, photographer, sports writer, and in other roles: I’m proud of what we have accomplished with the Anchor. I don’t think any of us had any idea what we were getting into five years ago. My attention will be on getting a new Center for Active Living for the next few years. I’m also hoping to find more tax relief programs for those who need it in town.
What makes the Hingham community special? Hingham tends to do the right thing. Sometimes quickly when a family is in need, or sometimes painfully slowly such as deciding on a big project — but almost always, things happen that need to happen.
What do you enjoy most doing in your spare time? I like to garden and fish, even though I never catch anything.
Favorite Hingham restaurant and meal: Square Cafe, Tuna two ways.
Favorite Hingham local spot: Turkey Hill/Whitney and Thayer Woods
Favorite vacation destination: Rome (Italy, not NY!)
Do you have a hidden talent? My kids say I’m pretty good at solving puzzles on Wheel of Fortune.
Interesting fact about yourself that others may not know about: I did an Ironman triathlon.
I know Josh as a valued member of the COA and the Chair of the COA marketing subcommittee. I am in awe of his talents and his ability to get things done.
