Once again, I am partnering this summer with Director of Veterans’ Services Keith Jermyn, a retired U.S. Navy senior chief petty officer, in a “Flower Power” fundraising campaign to benefit veterans.
Last year the Flower Power campaign was able to raise over $1,200 to support Hingham veterans with food insecurity. This meant that over 25 Hingham veterans were able to get a gift card to help purchase food the week of Thanksgiving. I sincerely hope the generous people, and business owners, of Hingham can make this an annual Thanksgiving tradition.
According to the Feeding America website, 1 in 9 working-age veterans nationwide live in food insecure households, while 24 percent of active-duty service members experienced food insecurity in 2020. Overall, 1.2 million low- income veterans use SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps).
While Thanksgiving maybe 19 weeks away your support of Flower Power now can help ensure that Hingham veterans with food insecurity receive a gift card for a local restaurant or grocery store.
The flowers may be purchased with cash or venmo@DDenapoli on Fridays and Saturdays — between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. — weather permitting. Special orders are always welcome, orders can be placed by email dianedenap@verizon.net. Small arrangements are $10.00 and large arrangements are $15.00.
I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all those who already donated and purchased flowers, especially our business partners Fruit Center and Mad Hatter Restaurant. If any other business owners would like to learn more about being a Flower Power partner, please reach out to Diane DeNapoli directly (dianedenap@verizon.net or 617-359-7212). A tax ID can be provided.
